Business Feasibility Analysis

Be sure you know what you want and what to expect when pursuing a new venture, business or project. A lot of time, resources and hard money can be saved in knowing what to do and the order in which to do it. A good rule of thumb is to never commission a business plan until a feasibility study has been completed first.

A feasibility study is normally less than 20% of the cost of a business plan and although a feasibility study will not be anywhere close to the in-depth “nuts and bolts” view of a business plan, it will do exactly what the name implies. It will show if a project is feasible before any other steps are taken or indeed paid for.

There are very big differences between a feasibility study and a business plan.

A feasibility study is designed to discover if a business or project is “feasible” or if it is not: (In short, does the business or project warrant further investment of time, money and further study or is it a non-starter). A feasibility study is a relatively inexpensive way to safeguard any wastage of further investment (will it work or won’t it).

If a project is seen to be feasible from the results of the study, the next logical step is to commission a full business plan.

Will the investment made in the feasibility study itself then be wasted? No.. Because the research and information uncovered in the study will be of good use in the business planning stage and will also reduce the research time and therefore the cost of the business plan.

Feasibility studies demonstrate to a prospective project owner or investor that a given concept is financially viable and whether further study and/or a business plan is warranted.

For a feasibility study, basic data is obtained from the client through a series of queries, questions and meetings, wherein the client provides some of the research and other data and facts need to be gained from a variety of sources.

The typical feasibility study contains, among other items, notes on financial projections, a general description of the business, general details describing how the company / project will be formed, managed and marketed, statements concerning the competition and a cash-flow projection based on averages.  Further notes can be included as to general details of the project and revelations found during the research stage. The study will normally be completed quickly and in very general format compared to that of a business plan.

A feasibility study is the due diligence that every person or company should do before starting any project. A well prepared and researched study could save hundreds of thousands of dollars further down the road. It helps avoid risk and answers questions, like:

Will it work ?
How will it work ?
What is needed ?
When is the best time ?
How much investment is needed ?
What will the return be ?
These questions are only the start.

The place to start is with a Feasibility Study.

Risk, as every successful entrepreneur knows, is an inescapable fact of business. A well prepared and researched study can help reduce the risk. By giving a true measurement of that  risk, feasibility studies help pinpoint market opportunities and pitfalls, as well as building  platforms for the assembling of good ideas. Once a full assessment has been completed, a firm launch pad is constructed for the implementation of the project.

Many new ventures and indeed, new projects, stumble in the first year. The main cause is lack  of adequate advanced planning, thus causing initial under-capitalization, cash-flow problems  and therefore panic management.

Customized Business Plan Development

A Business Plan is a detailed blueprint for building a given company. A business plan contains all that the Feasibility study has plus specific time-lines, detailed budgets with monthly and seasonal forecasts, letters of intent, resumes of staff, background, competition, strengths & weaknesses, work sheets and full notations, appendix and all related and required documents that will be referenced as the company is being developed.

A well-written business plan will show exactly what revenues can be expected and when to expect them, what overheads and expenses will need to be paid and exactly when they will be due.

It will also show staffing levels and salaries along with costs of employment, sales levels with monthly and seasonal trends, set-up costs, building/office costs, utility and telephone costs, legal, insurance and accounting costs, office furniture and supplies costs and a myriad of other costs and projections as well as legal requirements and conformation to regulations.

In addition to the projections and costs, the business plan will feature sections on demographics, sales and sales methods, objectives, expansion plans, contingency exercises, product/services market introductions, regulatory requirements, laws of City, Provincial and Federal government relating to the business / project and much more.

A well-written business plan can help maximize potential and minimize overheads, liabilities and risk associated with any project.

A business plan is a blueprint of an organization's past, present and future. It is vital to the success of any venture and an indispensable management tool. Producing a business plan offers an excellent opportunity to consider all the facets of a business or a project, testing feasibility and providing greater confidence in decision making. It will also help identify future financing needs and is often a necessary step in raising external finance.

Benefits and Uses of a Business Plan

  • Establishing corporate goals and setting objectives
  • Develop in more detail the broad action points from strategic planning
  • Testing the feasibility of a business strategy
  • Communicating corporate goals and objectives to owners, management, investors and employees

What Should be Included in a Business Plan?

  • Sufficient detail and overview to enable the reader to get a complete and accurate picture of the business
  • Information on any risks associated with the plans and contingencies to minimize such risks
  • Flexibility and contingency plans if key assumptions are not met
  • Trends and developments in the marketplace and the operating environment

Producing a business plan offers an excellent opportunity to consider all the facets of a business or a project, testing feasibility and providing greater confidence in decision making

COMPUTER HARDWARE & SOFTWARE CONSULTANCY

In today's minefield of software and technology, regardless of the fact you  are an existing well established company or starting a new business or venture, the choice of hardware and software is mind boggling.

You don't want to spend money on computers that in 3 months time won't do the job, while at the same time you can't over spend on getting super servers and machines that may never be used to 25% of their potential.

  • What Hardware do you purchase?

  • What Operating System is best for you?

  • What Software do you need?

  • How do you learn to use it?

Get an independent consultant. One who does not sell hardware or operating systems. Someone who can give experienced, un-bias advice and recommendations.

In our experience, we can normally save a client approximately 3 times the amount that the consultancy actually costs.

We all talk to experts before we purchase stocks, accountants for out taxes and doctors for our health. However, so many business owners ask "John" next door (he's always on the Net), what hardware and software to get to run their entire business, well-being and future of their company.

This form of consultancy is exceptionally cost effective, so why trust the survival of your business to anyone less than the best.

One on one teaching available, by the hour (two hour minimum) for the following computer applications: $45.00 per hour.

                                         FrontPage                     Word

Customized Marketing Plan Development

The Marketing Plan is a highly detailed, heavily researched and, hopefully, well written report that many inside and possibly outside the organization will evaluate. It is an essential document for both large corporate marketing departments and for start-up companies.  Essentially the Marketing Plan:

  • Forces the marketing personnel to look internally in order to fully understand the results of past marketing decisions.
  • Forces the marketing personnel to look externally in order to fully understand the market in which they operate.
  • Sets future goals and provides direction for future marketing efforts that everyone within the organization should understand and support.
  • Is a key component in obtaining funding to pursue new initiatives.

The Marketing Plan is generally undertaken for one of the following reasons:

  • Needed as part of the yearly planning process within the marketing functional area.
  • Needed for a specialized strategy to introduce something new, such as new product planning, entering new markets, or trying a new strategy to fix an existing problem.
  • Is a component within an overall business plan, such as a new business proposal to the financial community.

Our focus is on the development and implementation of customized marketing and communication plans that raise awareness of your service and get results from your target markets. We research industry and competitive trends, analyze how they apply to your business, and recommend the best marketing tactics to capitalize on these trends.

We can handle your marketing plan entirely or available by the hour to help guide you through the completion of your own plan- two hour minimum charge.

Personal Financial Analysis

If you'd like to improve your financial situation, begin this year with a financial check up. Follow through with classes, reading and extra effort in the areas that need improvement. A financial check up is designed to help you determine where you are now, where you want to go and how you can get there.

Tools to help you with your financial check up include a net worth statement, an income and expenses statement, financial ratios, savings and retirement planning, insurance, goals and budgeting.

To know where you are now, create a family net worth statement. This will give you a picture of what you own (assets) and what you owe (liabilities). The difference between your assets and your liabilities is your net worth. It is not unusual for young people with new loans and low savings to owe more than they own which shows up as a negative net worth. By doing a yearly financial check up, you will begin to see this change.

Another tool that illustrates where you are now is an income and expense statement. This statement balances how much money you are bringing home against all of your expenses. When you subtract expenses from income, you'll know what your net gain or loss is. If you have a net loss, you may need to revise some of your spending. If you have a net gain, you have money that can be used for additional savings and investments.

Business Taxes

Summary of information reproduced from Ontario Government Tax Brochure- everything from collecting taxes, filing of tax forms and business licenses etc.

1. Dealing with Business Taxes

All businesses must be aware of the various taxes that may apply to their product or service. Depending on the type and location of products or services being offered, federal, provincial and/or local business taxes may apply.

For further information:
please call 1-800-959-5525
visit the Web site: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/business/menu-e.html

The Ontario Health Premium
As of July 1, 2004 all employees working in Ontario will be required to pay an additional tax called The Ontario Health Premium. This tax will be deducted from pay and pensions as part of personal income tax requirements. The premiums would range from $60 to $900 a year for people with a taxable income of $21,000 a year or more. For detailed information on The Ontario Health Premium and employer responsibilities regarding payroll and deductions please contact the Canada Revenue Agency.

For further information

2. Business Number (BN)
The Business Number is a reference numbering system that replaces the multiple numbers businesses require to deal with government. The Business Number can encompass one or more of the following accounts: Goods and Services Tax (GST), Payroll Deductions, Import/Export and Corporate Income Tax. There is no fee for a Business Number.

For further information:
please call 1-800-959-5525
see the document Business Number - BN
visit the Web site: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/rc2/README.html

3. Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Most goods and services sold or provided in Canada are taxable under the GST at a rate of 7%. Certain items, such as basic groceries and prescription drugs, are also taxable, but are taxed at 0%. These are referred to as "zero-rated goods and services." A limited number of goods and services are exempt from the GST.

Who must obtain a Business Number for the GST?
Most persons and organizations engaged in commercial activities in Canada who have worldwide taxable sales of more than $30 000 in any previous four consecutive calendar quarters or in any one calendar quarter must register for and collect GST or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). All taxi operators must register for GST/HST, regardless of their revenues.

If your total annual sales are less than or equal to $30,000, you are considered to be a small supplier and are not required to have a Business Number for the purpose of GST. If you do not obtain a Business Number, you do not charge GST.

For further information:
please call 1-800-959-5525
see the document Goods and Services Tax and Harmonized Sales Tax - GST/HST
visit the Web site: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/menu/EmenuHDC.html

4 Provincial Sales Tax (PST)
The PST is a tax based on the retail price of most goods, and is also known as the Retail Sales Tax. Businesses that sell taxable goods or provide a taxable service are responsible for collecting and remitting the tax. Businesses required to collect the PST must obtain a Vendors Permit through the Ontario Ministry of Finance. There is no fee for this permit.

What does the PST apply to?
The PST rate in Ontario is 8% on most purchases of goods and on labour charges to install, repair, and maintain taxable goods and equipment. The tax is also payable at the same rate on prepared food purchased from an eating establishment, where the total charge is more than $4.00. Certain purchases, such as food products and children's clothing, are exempt from this tax.

Further information on the PST, vendor permits and tax exempt purchases may be obtained from the Ontario Ministry of Finance, Retail Sales Tax Office. To find the appropriate office, you can contact the Ontario Ministry of Finance Information Centre at 1-800-263-7965 or consult the blue pages of your telephone directory. You may also wish to consult the document Vendor Permits and the Retail Sales Tax and the document Purchase Exemption Certificates for Retail Sales Tax.

5 Municipal Business Taxes
Many cities and towns charge business taxes to businesses operating within their jurisdiction. These taxes can vary according to geographic location, type of business (e.g. manufacturing, retail), and amount of space occupied. If you are starting a new business or purchasing an existing business, it is wise to inquire with the municipality to determine what local business taxes will be charged and how they will be calculated. Researching and understanding municipal tax rates should be part of your business plan and may help you decide where to locate your business. For more information on municipal business taxes, you should contact the taxation office of the city or town where your business will be located.

Business Licensing

6 Do I need a license to start my own business?

Many types of businesses require licensing from the federal, provincial and/or municipal government. These requirements could include an operating permit, special permission to operate in your chosen location or specific qualifications for you and/or your employees. For more information, you may wish to consult:

7 Municipal Requirements
Each municipal government has the authority to issue its own business licenses within its jurisdiction. Since there is no uniformity throughout the province regarding municipal licenses for businesses, you should consult with the appropriate local officials to determine whether your business will be affected by local regulations and licensing requirements. Businesses (including home-based businesses) must also meet the zoning by-laws that control property uses in their municipality.

For further information:
see the document Municipal Requirements to Start a Business
visit the Web site: http://199.202.235.157/ylg/ontario.html

Oneida Business Communications is available to help you with any of the above. Contact oneidacomm@rogers.com or 1.416.487.0258 to set up a consultation or for further information.

Web Site Design

Website Development
Websites can be both an informational tool and a lead generation marketing tool. As with any form of marketing, understanding the customer is the first objective. Finding out the habits of people surfing for your type of product, placing your site so your potential customers will find you and producing a site that will not only describe your product but also engage the viewer are all critical for a successful web campaign. Producing an aesthetically pleasing site is only the beginning.

Search Engine Placement - How do your potential customers find you?
A common misconception is that if you produce a beautiful, fully interactive site, it will be both successful and profitable. The reality is that if your customers cannot find your website, it is useless.

We will work with you to identify exactly how your customers will find your website through the numerous search engines. We will help you with your submission to various search engines and optimize your site to help you gain the most traffic.

Navigation
After your potential customers find your website they also must be able to find the information they are looking for. Understanding the type of customer is essential. Many target markets are new to the internet so a clear path to the information they seek needs to be developed on every page. Many web pages are confusing and will lose users. We develop indexes and navigation that will allow your customer to easily find the information that they seek.

On-line Presentations
A cost effective method of getting information directly to your customers is through online presentations. These types of presentations can be done through live video feeds, flash presentations, PowerPoint presentations and interactive presentations where you interact with the user one-on-one or in a group.

Internet Newsletters
These newsletters are an effective way for you to communicate events, new concepts or information on new products and services to your customers, prospects and employees. These newsletters can be delivered by e-mail, website or instant messaging.

E-mail Blasts
E-mail blasts are an effective way to communicate to prospects cost effectively. We will help develop your list of qualified e-mail recipients and deliver your message.

Starting a business:

What it takes to setting up a business in Ontario and the various
government forms required. Ownership, GST, PST etc.

I would also like to speak on the values of getting a proper education (I started college at the age of 41 dropping out of high school in grade nine when I was sixteen and going back- it is never too late) and expanding this area into the need for a  business administration and or a marketing education at the college and university level and the need for the aboriginal community to develop our skills in establishing a business future for our communities. There are far too few native people entering business programs today.

As a community we have already established Native community centres which are not being utilized to their full potential, lets expand the offerings of these centres from accommodating individuals as drop in centres to expanding their horizons by nurturing, developing and fulfilling their needs. These various centres could be used per month to hold these lectures/teaching in, anywhere from 2-3 hours to an entire day. Any suggestions? It's time we put our knowledge and expertise in business together and  help out our community.

If there is anyone else from the business community who would like to contribute their expertise towards starting a program for native people in our community I welcome your input. This could start out as a question and answer period for our future business leaders to discuss and review business and marketing plans, pitfalls of doing business etc.
